Motherhood, pregnancy or marriage effects?

The existence of large child penalties on women’s labor market outcomes has been documented for multiple countries and time periods. In this paper, we assess the extent to which marriage decisions pregnancies may partly explain these penalties. Using data from 29 drawn Survey Health, Ageing Retirement in Europe (SHARE), show that although a negative effect employment (3.3%), its magnitude is much smaller than first (23%). Moreover, find end non-live births have non-statistically significant effects following years, supporting exogeneity assumption underlying identification penalty studies. These new results lend support hypothesis child-rearing, rather or pregnancy, responsible women exiting force upon motherhood.
